Dual Review of Abstracts:

Dual review (screening) of search results is recommended in major guidance sources such as the Cochrane Handbook, the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's Methods Guide for Effectiveness and Comparative Effectiveness Reviews, and the Institute of Medicine's Finding What Works in Health Care: Standards for Systematic Reviews. To date there has been little empirical research investigating the efficacy of dual review, and thus the question has been raised as to whether it should be a required step in the systematic review process.
